The Punjab government has decided to shift Pirwadhai General Bus Stand along with 44 small and large public transport terminals, all goods transport terminals, and the Islamabad fruit and vegetable market to new locations near the Rawalpindi Ring Road.

This decision aims to reduce traffic congestion inside Rawalpindi city and stop the entry of heavy vehicles into urban areas.

Background of Pirwadhai Bus Stand

Pirwadhai General Bus Stand was moved from Liaquat Bagh to Pirwadhai in 1975 during the government of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
At that time, the move caused strong protests, and transporters went on a week-long strike before the issue was settled.

Now, nearly five decades later, another major shift is planned, but this time towards the city outskirts.

What Is Changing Now

  • All major transport terminals in Rawalpindi will be moved near the Ring Road
  • Heavy transport will be completely banned from entering Rawalpindi city
  • Any heavy vehicle found inside the city will be impounded
  • Terminals at Faizabad, Chungi No. 26, and other areas will also be relocated

New Role of Pirwadhai Bus Stand

Pirwadhai General Bus Stand will come under full ownership of the Punjab government and will function as a central transport hub.

It will serve:

  • Inter-district transport
  • Intra-city transport
  • Rawalpindi-Islamabad route vehicles

Local buses for Rawalpindi and Islamabad will operate from Pirwadhai with fares between Rs20 and Rs50.
